Houses

For every home we design, we take time to get to know the occupants and work to understand their needs, translating these into bespoke living spaces that are a joy to inhabit.

Our tailored approach to residential projects is underpinned by our extensive experience in DA preparation and approvals, which allows us to confidently carry projects from concept to completion in urban and regional areas alike. Our experience in housing design includes renovations, new buildings and alterations within heritage conservation areas.

Multi Unit Housing

BKA Architecture has worked with some of Australia’s leading developers to deliver highly coveted residential dwellings across the country. Driving our long history of success in this sector is a collaborative design approach and finely tuned ability to balance design integrity with commercial targets, costs and planning concerns.

We work closely with clients and council to explore new solutions that place creativity, community satisfaction and sensitivity to the environment at the core of the design and building process.

Community

From art galleries to cultural centres, at BKA we strive to create high quality civic and public spaces that are a source of pride for the communities they serve. We believe that successful communal spaces promote a sense of unity, idenity and interconnectedness amongst both groups and individuals.

By consistantly seeking to gain an in depth understanding of the local community in which each project is embedded, we endeavour to further enhance the useability of each space.

Regional

From our collective three studio practice based on the North Coast, Newcastle and Sydney, we have enjoyed the experience of working across many regional areas. We understand the needs of regional communities and their desire to improve local facilities whilst attracting visitors to the area.

BKA’s experience in these developments includes libraries, sport facilities, art galleries and schools. More recently, with a steady increase in the occupation of regional areas, there has also been a significant focus on residential developments in locations such as Harrington, Forster, Tuncurry and Byron Bay.

Interior Design

BKA has a breadth of experience in interior-based projects across a wide range of sectors including education, housing and hospitality. We design with intent and nuance, paying close attention to material selection and colour palette to generate unique, atmospheric outcomes.

Spaces play a crucial role in the lived experience and wellbeing of individuals and subsequently, we ensure every interior is distinctive and bespoke for differing clients and occupants.

Sports Facilities

BKA Architecture is commited to designing dynamic and responsive sporting facilties that continually benefit the health and vitality of the communities they serve.

Providing a source of communal wellbeing, our stadiums, sporting hubs and school halls meet the needs of users, with a strong emphasis on accesibility and equity for all. We ensure our developments are embedded with passive design principles, future proofing all sporting facilities with flexibility and adaptability.

Education

The education sector is one of BKA’s foremost areas of expertise. Locally and abroad, we have a long track record of delivering high quality schools and environments for all levels of learning, from childcare and early education to tertiary studies.

We believe that learning never stops. Our team keeps abreast of innovations informing education design and pedagogy around the world and uses this knowledge to respond to shifts in the education landscape, such as the advent of digital instruction and growing demand for flexible learning spaces.

Hospitality

From cafes and restaurants to hotels and resorts, we endeavor to create distinctive hospitality spaces that form the backdrops to unforgettable dining and leisure experiences. At all scales, our projects within this sector balance a strong focus on the customer experience, whilst meeting client bottom lines and commercial imperatives.

In addition to exceeding industry best practice in sustainability, we also focus on regulatory compliance and design excellence in all of our hospitality projects.

Adaptive Re-use

Historic and existing buildings play a valuable role in not only contributing to the identity of a site, but also shaping communities and teaching us about the past. With this in mind, BKA Architecture treats all of our adaptive reuse projects as an opportunity to bring stories from previous generations to life in a way that resonates with the users of today and tomorrow.

To date, we have applied this nuanced approach to adaptive reuse projects across a breadth of sectors including commercial, residential, and educational developments.

Commercial

Since the earliest days of our practice, BKA have worked consistently throughout the commercial sector by collaborating with developers, private clients and major tenants alike on a broad spectrum of projects.

From retail precincts and showrooms to office buildings and mixed-use developments, we take a collaborative approach that involves our client throughout the entire design process.

Masterplanning

At BKA Architecture, we believe masterplanning is a crucial part of the design process for projects that envision future growth and development. We collaborate closely with our clients and stakeholders to listen to their vision.

BKA have developed masterplans for schools and community hubs that communicate growth strategy and trajectory whilst illustrating the interplay of building and landscape connections. We deliver strategic and considered design that is focussed on human interaction with the surrounding environment and bringing diverse client visions to life.

Land Environment Court

BKA has considerable experience navigating the Land Environment Court Process, with most projects being decided during Section 34 Conferences. Around half of all projects are BKA from the beginning, whilst the other half have required BKA redesigning to gain approval and meet the needs of all stakeholders.

On many of these occassions, the engagement has been recommended by lawyers representing clients who had their original developments rejected by council. Projects have included multi residential, boarding houses, commercial and religious buildings.
