The Singleton Arts and Cultural Centre was built to promote creative activities in the Hunter Valley, providing space for local art shows and giving the rural community access to international exhibitions. Located on a floodplain, the Arts and Culture Centre, featuring the new gallery wing, offers an upgrade to the existing Visitor’s Information Centre, which shares its extensive site. Perhaps most importantly, the gallery sustains flexibility throughout, catering to various demographics and exhibition changes; the design is ‘future-proofed’, easily allowing further expansion.
The main gallery is flexible and open, allowing the space to be transformed for various exhibitions and community functions. Exposed steel beams traverse the space, revealing the services above in a gesture that adheres to the project’s material honesty.
BKA Architecture was awarded a Commendation in the Public Architecture Category in the 2024 Newcastle Architecture Awards from the Australian Institute of Architecture.
