The proposed design of 38 affordable studio apartments will contribute to the ongoing revitalisation of Newcastle’s Hunter Street and has now been approved in Land and Environment Court. Being a mixed-use development, the design features a cafe at ground level, further activating a streetscape that has been slowly recovering from a high number of vacancies and urban decay. Although initially contrasting with the low-rise urban fabric, the Local Council envisages that the commercial and retail area will be built up to 45metres. At 13 storeys, the development will not only further this narrative, but has distinct advantages in its views capturing the heart of Newcastle – its world-renowned beaches, harbour and industrial exports.

Naturally, as the building accommodates these views it twists in the sky, resulting in a sculptural form that breaks the monotony of the built surroundings. Scaling up the apartment tower, the views shift of each floor towards the north, east and west. The north-facing balconies at the upper levels are directed towards Nobby’s headland, gradually turning towards the grain silos in Carrington, looking over the proposed building at Honeysuckle.
