Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary Expansion
BKA Architecture have again partnered with Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary to assist the delivery of their new milestone – a new multi-million dollar expansion to the existing hospital facility. The new extension was officially opened recently by Federal Environmental Minister Tanya Plibersek alongside the Port Stephens Koala Hospital President, Ron Land.
Our relationship with the Tourist park facility began through engagement by Port Stephens Council where the koala clinic facility was delivered as one of the key features of the original tourism park project. Tourist centre, cafe and public amenities, reflections park, administration offices, 21 ‘glamping’ style overnight accommodation facilities centred around an Interpretive landscaped walkway, koala skywalk and resident koala display enclosures.
The newly expanded clinic, funded by NSW Government to an A-grade world class facility inclusive of multiple operating theatres, multi-purpose triage stations, CT scanner, and spaces for educational resources set to improve the skills of experts to treat wildlife rescue and save endangered mammals.
The hospital’s architectural form of simple, strong geometry continues with seamless transition between existing and new, a focus of quality material selection and construction detailing. Design inwardly focused to a natural connection of treatment spaces flooded with natural light and direct engagement with surrounding natural landscape.
A facility unlike any other in Australia.
